If comfort and passenger space are high on your list of priorities when looking for a new vehicle, the 2014 Ford Explorer should be high on your list of vehicles to check out. While this SUV is based on the same platform as Ford’s popular Taurus, it’s a completely different vehicle. The body has been adapted to seat up to seven and the suspension tuning has been adjusted to suit a much larger vehicle.
Under the hood, drivers get a choice of three distinct engines. The standard 3.5 Liter V6 puts out 290 hp and 255 lb-ft and is mated to a 2- or 4-wheel drive system via a 6-speed automatic transmission. Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist come standard along with a Terrain Management System for 4WD models. If fuel efficiency is a larger concern, the 2.0 Liter EcoBoost is available, making 240 hp, 270 lb-ft and returning up to 28 mpg in highway driving. Finally, drivers who want a more engaging experience can go with the Explorer Sport 4WD which makes use of a 3.5 Liter EcoBoost V6, putting out 365 hp and 360 lb-ft. Towing capacity is 5,000 lbs with a properly equipped Explorer.
Inside, plenty of upscale materials and quality is the standard. Available second row bucket seats mean comfort can be found in any seat. Tech features and Ford’s Sync infotainment system are available to keep passengers entertained while a host of safety features make sure all occupants are safe in any situation.
